Geunyoung Kim began her musical journey at the age of 4 with piano lessons and started violin at 7. Her talent has earned her several prestigious awards, including First Prize as part of a piano trio at the 2025 Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition. She also took First Prize in the Duet category at the 2024 Charleston International Music Competition, Third Prize at the 2013 Premiere Chamber Orchestra National Competition in Seoul, Third Prize at the 2012 Guri-si Symphony Orchestra Competition in Seoul, Third Prize at the 2012 Minerva Orchestra Competition in Seoul, and a Merit Award at the 2011 Korea Festival Chamber Competition in Seoul.
Geunyoung Kim graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from Dankook University in South Korea, where she studied under Dr. Sarm Kim. She then continued her education at Michigan State University, earning a Performance Diploma, Master’s, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Violin Performance under Professor I-Fu Wang. Geunyoung has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Dankook University Scholarship (2011-2012), the Romeo Tata Graduate Fellowship (2022-2023), and the Michigan State University Scholarship (2019-2024).
Kim is passionate about chamber music and has devoted herself to performing with the Dankook University Alumni Ensemble and the Goyang Arts High School Alumni Ensemble at the Seoul Baroque Chamber Hall and Beethoven House in Seoul, South Korea. She has also participated in the Camerata Michigan-West Circle Series and Cello Plus, performing music from the Baroque era to contemporary music with MSU faculty at Fairchild Theater, Michigan State University. Geunyoung was a guest violinist at Dale Voelker’s Organ Recital at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Lansing, MI, performing Bach’s Sonata No. 2 for Violin & Harpsichord, BWV 1015. Her musical repertoire extends beyond traditional classical music; she has performed 20th-century French music at Hollander Hall in East Lansing, including a piece by female composer Cécile Chaminade, Piano Trio No. 2 in A minor, and Maurice Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello.
Geunyoung Kim has performed throughout the U.S. and South Korea. She holds orchestral experience from numerous performances in Korea, including with the Lindenbaum Orchestra, Symphony SONG, and the Korean National Opera, where she performed at the Korea Seoul Arts Center and Lotte Concert Hall. In the U.S., she has showcased her talent as acting assistant concertmaster and principal 2nd violin with the Alma Chamber Orchestra. She also served as assistant principal 2nd violin during the Midland Symphony Orchestra's 50th Anniversary Celebration and as assistant concertmaster in the MLK Dream Orchestra in 2019. She has performed with esteemed ensembles across Michigan, including the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, and Jackson Symphony Orchestra.
Geunyoung is currently the concertmaster of the Lapeer Symphony Orchestra and a violinist with the Midland Symphony Orchestra, developing her career as a performer while teaching at the MSU Community Music School, St. Paul Catholic School, and Spring Vale Christian School in Owosso, MI, where she fosters young musicians.
